I can’t speak from experience, but I have been told before that once you have children that time seems to fly exponentially faster. I can’t imagine time flying faster then it is at this moment, but yesterday I visited my good friends Kelly, Alan, and their ever growing little boy Zach. It seems like yesterday that I photographed Kelly’s maternity session. And since then Zach has seen a lot of the camera. I came back a few weeks later and captured him at 2 weeks old. Then again a few months later when he hit 4 months. What can I say…he’s a natural!
So it was only fitting to come back a 4th time to document the young man as he was just about to turn the ripe old age of 12 months (That’s 1 year for you math challenged). A week from today Zach will have a big birthday bash and I hope to capture as much of the emotion as I can. Stay tuned for those photos next week.
Below are a few of my favorite photos from yesterday. The day was beautiful and I was super happy when Kelly wanted to have some photos taken outside amongst green grass and fall trees. Enjoy!

It’s that time of year again! Time to start thinking about that holiday card for friends and family. I’ll be in the San Francisco bay area November 6th & 7th and will have some time available to do some holiday card sessions. Location will be somewhere in the east bay and will take around 15 minutes.
If you are interested please email me at dan[at]danshawphotography.com and I will let you know what time slots are still available.
I have 2 easy packages to choose from. Details are below.
I didn’t know of the sport of Cyclo-Cross till a few months ago when it was introduced to me. A lot of triathletes will race this sport not only because it is great training, but the season also falls during the fall and winter seasons when triathlons usually do not run.
Picture a bicycle race consisting of many laps of a short 1/5-2 mile track featuring pavement, grass, steep hills, and obstacles requiring the racer to quickly dismount and run with their bike at times. Sounds like fun to me!
A couple days ago Alicia and I headed an hour south of Portland to compete in a race that took place on a farm (Alicia rode, while I played cheerleader). Between races there were train rides, pumpkin canons, and lip-smacking BBQ to entertain you. It had rained all day the day before and even all morning creating this incredibly muddy track which any cyclo-cross rider would lick their chops at.
I came prepared with my camera to capture some potentially interesting photos on the day and luckily it stopped raining during the races. Below are some of my favorites.
It was quiet in the hospital room. Mary had been through a lot the last week. With the help of some drugs she was managing to keep a smile while Ben lay relatively quiet in her belly. Then on Saturday morning, as if Ben finally had had enough of this dark and warm place for the last 9 months, he decided to make his entrance. And quite an entrance it was! As if Mary was the quarter back and the doctor the receiver, Ben entered this world ready to tackle life.
A few days ago I headed down to Grover Beach, passing my old stomping grounds in San Luis Obispo, and greeted Ben with a big smile. Talk about cute. Mary was still glowing….amazingly bright while Scott and his visiting parents did everything they could to make her comfortable. Thank you guys for inviting me into your home.
The photos below are only a taste of what happened those next couple hours.
Welcome to the world Ben Thomas!
Sleepy Ben!
I can’t stop smiling every time I look at this one!
One of my favorite shots of the day. I think it shows how cared for Ben will be.
Open eyes! Just after his feeding. That is one happy boy.
Right there is the future left hand of an amazing ball player.
